A recovered CDA case file documents the behavioral evaluation of a minor subject, designation JB-14, whose nightly episodes of 'unauthorized perceptual framing' have been flagged under the Cognitive Realignment intake protocol. The boy describes a recurring interior landscape he calls JaJa — an island that is both paradise and maze — and insists his father is somewhere inside it, waiting. The file is assembled from session transcripts, intake forms, and one handwritten note that was never formally logged. The horror is not what the CDA does to the boy. The horror is what the CDA concludes he is.

Chapter 1
The folder is the color of weak tea and the corner is darker than the rest, the way paper darkens when it has been set down in a ring of condensation and then forgotten. The stamp on the cover reads INTAKE, COGNITIVE REALIGNMENT PROTOCOL, i…
Chapter 2: JaJa Rendered in Clinical Terms
and the water is always the same color as before breakfast. That is the first line on the page, mid-sentence, the upper margin torn cleanly across so that whatever date or evaluator's name once sat above it is gone. What remains is the boy…
Chapter 3: A Recommendation Has Been Made
The page is sleeved in fresh acetate. You can hear it, even on the document scanner's audio capture, which the archivist left running by accident during digitization. A faint cling. A static whisper as the plastic releases the paper and the…
Chapter 4: The Spectrum the System Cannot Index
The page is the wrong kind of paper. Every other document in the file has the tooth and weight of CDA letterhead, that bluish institutional bond that holds a stamp without bleeding. The page between Session 11 and Session 12 is yellow. Col…
Chapter 5: Auditor Pell Requests the Secondary File
The form is a yellow triplicate, the kind that leaves a ghost of itself on the page beneath. In the requester field, typed clean, the name reads PELL, M. — INTERNAL REVIEW. Date of submission, the second Tuesday of the month. Under file typ…
Chapter 6: Graduate: File Closed
The form is printed on the same buff cardstock as the intake sheet from five months earlier. Same weight. Same watermark in the lower left, a faint compass rose only visible if the page is tilted toward the light. The boxes are filled in th…
