The map

Energy, past, present and frontier

What powered the world before, what runs it now, and what people are still chasing, with the companies, labs and inventors behind each. Every source carries an honest read of the evidence. Some of the inventors here also appear on Disappeared, and the frontier claims connect to experiments you can run yourself.

Past

What powered the world before, and the claims of its era.

Radiant energy devices

Unproven

Early twentieth century claims of devices that drew power from the surroundings, with nothing visible feeding them.

  • T. Henry Moray ↗Inventor
Claimed from the 1920s to draw power from a source "available everywhere" with no outside input; no device was independently verified.

Keely's "etheric" motor

Disproven

A Gilded Age machine said to run on vibrations of the ether, which drew investors for decades.

  • John Ernst Worrell Keely ↗Inventor
Demonstrated his motor from the 1870s. His claims were disputed throughout his career and are now generally considered pseudoscientific.

Oil

Established

Drilled petroleum replaced whale oil for light, then fuelled the century of the engine.

  • Edwin Drake ↗Inventor
Drilled the first commercial oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859.

Steam

Established

Burning fuel to boil water and drive pistons powered the Industrial Revolution, and steam turbines still make most thermal electricity.

  • Thomas Newcomen ↗Inventor
Built the first practical steam engine, for pumping mines, in 1712.
  • James Watt ↗Inventor
His separate condenser made steam engines far more efficient.

Now

What runs the grid and the road today.

Wind

Established

Turbines on land and offshore, now a major share of power in several countries.

  • Vestas ↗Company
    Danish wind turbine maker.
  • Ørsted ↗Company
Offshore wind developer, formerly an oil and gas company.

Hydro

Established

Falling water through turbines; the largest renewable source for most of the last century.

Nuclear fission

Established

Splitting heavy atoms for heat. Large plants run today; smaller modular reactors are being built.

Geothermal

Established

Heat from inside the earth. New drilling methods aim to make it work almost anywhere.

  • Fervo Energy ↗Company
Enhanced geothermal using horizontal drilling methods from oil and gas.

Batteries and storage

Established

Not a source, but what lets sun and wind run at night: grid batteries and long-duration storage.

  • CATL ↗Company
The largest maker of lithium-ion batteries.
  • Form Energy ↗Company
Iron-air batteries designed to discharge for days.

Frontier

Physics in progress, bold claims, and garage builds.

Fusion

Demonstrated

Joining light atoms, the sun's own process. Ignition has been reached in a lab; a power plant has not.

Cold fusion and LENR

Unproven

Low-energy nuclear reactions: claims of nuclear heat at room temperature since 1989. Still not reliably reproduced, still funded at the margins.

Hydrinos

Unproven

A claimed lower energy state of hydrogen. Mainstream physicists reject the underlying theory.

Space-based solar

Demonstrated

Collecting sunlight in orbit, where it never sets, and beaming the power down.

Zero-point energy

Theoretical

The vacuum is never quite empty, and the Casimir effect is real. Drawing useful net power from it has never been shown.

  • Casimir effect ↗Program
A measured force between close metal plates from vacuum fluctuations.
  • Harold Puthoff ↗Inventor
Physicist who has written on zero-point energy and its possible uses.

Antimatter

Theoretical

The densest energy store physics allows, but making it costs vastly more energy than it returns.

Over-unity magnet motors

Disproven

Motors said to run forever on permanent magnets. More energy out than in would break conservation of energy, and no claim has survived independent testing. People keep building them, which is why our experiments measure rather than argue.

  • Tom Bearden (MEG) ↗Inventor
Built a "motionless electromagnetic generator" (US patent 6,362,718) claimed to power a load with no outside input; Wikipedia lists it among modern perpetual motion claims.

How this map works

  • Each source is rated by evidence: established, demonstrated, theoretical, unproven, or disproven. The rating is about the claim, not about the people.
  • People are described by what they claimed or did. Listing a builder records what they show, not that it works, and no one is called a fraud unless a court found it.
  • Every person or company links to their own work, and builders found online carry a link to where we found them.
  • Know a builder, a company, or a correction? Send it with a link to sandon@hivejournal.com.
